Cheap Drum Sets

Ok you are here to find out information about buying cheap drum sets, normally that means you are just beginning out in the world of drumming and want a cheap kit to get started on. Most people choose to buy a cheap drum set when beginning purely because if they dont like drumming in 6 months time they dont have a big bank loan to try pay. So assuming that you are a beginner let me be the first to welcome you to the world of drumming, it is amazing! Even if you are a complete beginner and have no rhythm yet it is still heaps of fun to play.

First off we better give you some orientation around the kit, a run through the basics.. A basic 5 piece set is made up of.
  • Bass Drum
  • Snare Drum
  • 2 Toms
  • 1 Floor tom
  • 1 Hi Hat
  • 1 Crash Cymbal
  • 1 Ride Cymbal
  • Hardware (Bass Pedal, Snare stand, Cymbal stands, Drum Stool)

Of course you can have less and more depending on your style, i personally use 3 toms but it is completely up to the drummer as to how many Toms/ Bass Drums/ Cymbals you want to use.

Now that we have the Introduction out of the way we need to figure out what your idea of "Cheap" really is? Lets face it, Drumming is an expensive hobby addiction, however you dont have to buy the most expensive kit to sound good!! I know drummers with very nice top of the range drum equipment but they cant play a para-diddle without dropping a stick, and i also know guys who can make sticks on a chair sound great!! so the first thing to remember is to get the practice in no matter what gear you have, this way you will be a solid drummer no matter what!

I would consider anything under 800 bucks to be cheap, however you can buy for half that price and still get good quality, one thing you need to remember when pricing is that normally cymbals are not included in the price unless clearly stated. If you are buying new i would suggest any of the big guys like Pearl, Tama, Yamaha, DW, Mapex, Ludwig etc.. you will find companies like Pearl and Tama do great entry level kits that are built to last, i bought a Pearl Export 15 years ago, it was second hand when bought and it has lasted a barrage of punishment and lived to tell the tale, likewise a good friend of mine bought a Tama Rockstar about the same time and his is still going strong. So dont think that just because it says "entry level" that its bad. Just get one, get started and you can always upgrade later if you want!

Buying second hand is a great idea for newcomers, because the set probably already has a few battle scars from the previous owner so you wont be afraid of hitting it too hard and giving it what it wants haha. You can for very good prices. I got my export second hand, two battered looking toms and a cheap bass drum and i have pounded it for 15 years with no problems so get out there and pick up a good deal, the sooner you do the sooner you will be sniffing after an upgrade.. Happy drumming!!
